ANALYSIS OF PERINATAL CONSEQUENCES IN PUERPERAS WHO CHOOSE AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO DELIVERY
Tetiana Fursa-Sovhyra Bogomolets National Medical University, Kyiv, Ukraine et al
Abstract
Introduction: “Non-traditional” approaches to deliveries today are one of the main new concepts of patient orientation in modern obstetrics, aimed at improving the delivery and postpartum period course and gaining a positive delivery experience.
Aim: To estimate the perinatal consequences and determine the psycho-emotional state of puerperal after the application of hydro technology during delivery.
Conclusions. The analysis of perinatal consequences shows a significantly higher number of newborns rated on the Apgar scale in the first and fifth minutes after birth in 9–10 points among newborns from women in labor of the main group and significantly higher scores for questionnaires “Women’s Satisfaction with Deliveries” and “Edinburgh Scale of Postpartum Depression” in women who gave birth using hydraulic technologies in the first and second periods of labor, indicating a better psycho-emotional state and contributing to an earlier establishment of lactation and a shorter stay in an obstetric hospital.
Water Birth Is Not Recommended In Indonesia, There Is A Danger To Mothers And Babies
21 December 2024, 18:06
JAKARTA Indonesian role artist Nikita Willy delivers happy news after she gave birth to her second son on December 15, 2024. However, the method of giving birth chosen by this 30-year-old artist is in the spotlight.
Even though it is a favorite choice for mothers, the water birth method has not yet been recommended in Indonesia. , Sp.OG said that in 2012 the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (POGI) had issued a circular to obstetricians not to carry out the practice of giving birthwater birth.
Doctor Ardiansjah explained several reasons why water birth was not recommended. Firstly, because scientific evidence regarding the safety and benefits of giving birth in water is still minimal. In addition, water birth is also not included in the medical education curriculum in Indonesia.
"So if an obstetrician practices water birth, the association cannot take responsibility if something happens," said Ardiansjah.
In the water birth process, said Ardiansjah, there are a number of risks such as infection because when giving birth everything comes out in the water, such as urine, feces, or blood vessel tearing, birth canal tearing, and others.
"When he was about to be born out of his head, sometimes he was already crying and breathing. Well, this can cause aspirations, then the water outside, which enters the lungs, and eventually can cause the baby to become asphytic, lack of oxygen. Or it can cause infection, to death in the fetus," said Fadli.

Cardiff midwifery research team scoop coveted award for research into waterbirths 22/10/24
The POOL study team from Cardiff University has won a prestigious award from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) for its research into the safety of waterbirths.
The team conducted the largest global study of waterbirths among more than 73,000 women which has provided convincing and conclusive evidence of this form of birthing when carried out by NHS midwives in the UK.
At the awards ceremony in London on 18 October, the RCM’s Chief Executive, Gill Walton, said: “The findings will form the basis of the knowledge around safety in the UK for many years to come, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have already indicated the results of the study will inform future recommendations on waterbirth.
“It is vital the findings are widely disseminated to midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists, parents, commissioners and providers of care. As such, the team has worked with its partners to develop freely available online resources which will make the study findings accessible to all midwives and expectant parents.”
The RCM award, sponsored by Vitabiotics Pregnacare, recognises a midwifery researcher or a team of researchers who are able to demonstrate that they have furthered the midwifery knowledge base for the benefit of women and families, and/or student midwives, midwives and MSWs, or other maternity professionals.
Susanne Bisinotto from Vitabiotics Pregnacare, said: “The POOL study team has raised the bar for midwifery research with their groundbreaking work on waterbirths. Their findings not only improve the safety and wellbeing of mothers and babies, but also underscore the vital importance of evidence-based research in advancing maternity care.
“Pregnacare is dedicated to supporting the health and safety of new mums and their babies, and we are honoured to sponsor this award, celebrating such significant contributions to midwifery practice.”
